Cressy House
The Cressy House project is a contemporary home designed to make the most of its Malvern site. The client’s brief was to use the potential of the land, take advantage of the rear laneway access, and deliver a high-end residence suited to its inner-city location.
The home is shaped by careful site analysis, responding to the flat block and its northern orientation. Living areas are positioned to capture both northern light and eastern morning sun, strengthening the connection between interior spaces and the courtyard. The building form along the northern edge also acts as a buffer to nearby train noise.
Kirby Architects relocated the garage to the rear via laneway access, freeing the front of the site for landscaping and creating a more open, considered streetscape. Keeping car parking at ground level was a deliberate decision, improving day-to-day liveability for families, supporting wet weather use, and ensuring long-term accessibility without reliance on lifts or stairs.
The Existing landscapes of the site have been carefully incorporated into the design, including an upper-level window positioned at canopy height to create a direct connection to the landscape.
The internal planning prioritises efficiency, with entry and transition spaces designed to avoid unnecessary corridors. Generous open-plan living zones support entertaining and everyday living, flowing to the courtyard. An upstairs balcony extends these spaces further, offering an additional setting for gathering and retreat. A separate, flexible space has been designed to function as a gym, workshop, or study, allowing the home to adapt to the clients’ changing needs over time.
